Friday interesting reads: 08.17.13 – 08.23.13
Another week passed by and I have yet to write anything since last Friday. To be fair (maybe), I did work late into the night a few times this week. Anytime I do that and not get enough sleep, I tend to lose out on creative juices. Here are some of my favorite reads from the past week. Not as much happened on the coffee front, but the other categories were great.
Coffee
- What happens when you abolish tipping: An insightful read on how a restaurant operated on no customer tips (automatically added into the bill) and the reactions of some customers.
- Squeaking by on smiles, tips, and latte art hearts: In response to the above tipping article, Cara reflects on how this approach would change the industry.
Life/Career
- Why I left Google: A fascinating and honest read on trusting your instincts in your career.
- How to get meetings with people too busy to see you: Some great tips for those who tend to ask mentors, “Hey, can I pick your brain over coffee?”
- What career path did you choose that you strongly advise against?: I hate Reddit, but dang, these responses are both enlightening and discouraging.
Women
- Workplace Bullshit Still Exists, Even if Some Bros Think Otherwise: The comments here are more interesting than the article. Unsurprisingly, sexism still occurs in the workplace and many people unwittingly play to it.
- I hate Strong Female Characters: The title is misleading; she dislikes the fact that the label even has to exist in Hollywood and gives some thought-provoking points on the topic.
- Victoria Beckham, working girl: A profile on a woman who has seeminly powered through life in an unconventional way and in sky-high heels.

- 20 Historic Black and White Photos Colorized: The title says it all. I love black & white photography, but it does sometimes set up a barrier of “history” to people. Color photographs at least make people think it was taken in recent years.
- Maximizing the Sale: Keys to Effective Packaging Design, Part II: A nice, overarching look at packaging design and what points to look at to drive sales.
- The Best Books on Writing, NYC, Animals, and More: A Collaboration with the New York Public Library: So many book titles to put on my list. If you’re in NYC, do me a favor and take some photos of this display.
